If you've ever experienced vertigo, you'll know just how unsettling it can be. That sudden spinning sensation- often triggered by simple movements like turning your head or getting out of bed- can interfere with your daily life, leaving you feeling off balance and uncertain.

But did you know that physiotherapists can play a key role in diagnosing and treating certain types of vertigo?

At our Bramhall clinic near Stockport, Cheshire, we regularly see patients suffering from dizziness and balance problems, and many are surprised to learn that physiotherapy can make a real difference.

What Is vertigo?

Vertigo is a symptom, not a condition in itself. It’s often caused by an issue with the inner ear, which is responsible for helping us maintain our balance. One of the most common causes of vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This occurs when tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and interfere with the ear’s ability to sense motion correctly.

Symptoms of vertigo can include:

  • A spinning or whirling sensation
  • Loss of balance or unsteadiness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Light-headedness

How can physiotherapy help with vertigo?

Physiotherapists trained in vestibular rehabilitation can assess your symptoms and determine the likely cause. If BPPV is the culprit, we may use a technique known as the Epley manoeuvre- a series of guided head and body movements designed to move the dislodged crystals back into the correct part of the ear. This technique can be highly effective and often brings relief after just one or two sessions.

For other types of vertigo, we offer vestibular rehabilitation exercises tailored to your specific needs. These can help your brain adapt to the confusing signals it’s receiving from the inner ear, improving your balance and reducing dizziness over time.

When to seek help for vertigo

If you’ve been struggling with dizziness or balance issues- especially if it’s triggered by movement- it’s worth speaking to a physiotherapist. A full assessment can identify whether physiotherapy is the right course of treatment for you, or if you need to be referred for further investigation.
